Screen reader help for public dashboard

The Better Data public dashboards are designed to enable screen reader use. They’re built with Microsoft Power BI tools and use Microsoft accessibility features. This page includes tips for use based on our screen reader user testing.

Expected behaviour

The employee and student dashboards are set up as embedded page elements. Things to note:

  • The dashboard will automatically launch a dialogue box with three options ("Show keyboard shortcuts", "Show screen reader tips", and "Skip to main content"). Select "Skip to main content" to being interacting with the elements.
  • Element lists are unavailable when interacting with the dashboards
  • The dashboards are designed in layers. Users can navigate between layers (e.g., page navigation, filter pane, visuals, etc.) using Enter, navigation arrows and Escape.
  • Up and down arrow navigation is reversed in the visual areas
  • The filter pane is marked by the description "Four item grouping"

Key board shortcuts

Microsoft’s accessibility support page includes keyboard shortcuts for everything in Power BI. You only need a few keyboard shortcuts to interact with the public dashboard.

  • Enter interactive dashboard is Ctrl + Enter
  • Show all visuals as tables is Ctrl + Shift +F11
  • Move focus between sections is Ctrl + F6
  • Select an object or a section is Enter or Space
  • Show all keyboard shortcuts is Shift + ?
