BCom program structure
Program overview
Our program structure weaves business coursework with your non-business interests, and layers in real-world experience like work terms, international exchange and mentorship. This structure allows you to gain the perspective, experience and knowledge to launch your career with confidence!
Year 1
Your first year is all about exploring your interests while starting to develop essential business skills. You'll take a mix of elective courses across disciplines and foundational courses in business, economics and statistics. These courses set the stage for the cohorted learning experience that begins in the spring term of year 2.
Find detailed information on course and grade requirements in our current students section. You can use the elective course guide to help build your schedule.
Year 2
The fall term of year 2 gives you another term to explore electives and complete the last of your pre-cohort business requirements.
Starting in the spring term, you’ll join your BCom cohort to begin a full slate of business courses in a highly collaborative and engaging format. You’ll gain knowledge in:
- Management accounting
- Business analytics
- Organizations, community and society
- Law and ethics
- Marketing
Between year 2 and 3, you will complete a required work experience term during the summer.
Year 3
Your third year continues the cohorted experience. Here you’ll learn how to tackle business problems with an innovative and holistic approach, while gaining valuable experience as part of a project team.
In the spring term, you’ll also start taking upper-level electives, including prerequisites for certain specializations in year 4.
Most BCom students choose to complete another work experience term in the summer between year 3 and 4 to deepen their learning.
Year 4
In year 4, you’ll customize your BCom degree with a specialization and by taking a variety of electives. You’ll also have the opportunity to study abroad at one of our partner universities or complete more coursework at UVic. (Those completing the Financial Management – Accounting stream will have additional specialization content that may affect when they can go on exchange. We recommend these students speak with an advisor about their sequencing options.)
Many students also finish a final work experience term to build even more career-ready experience.
Each specialization includes a cohorted module taken in a single academic term. Some modules have prerequisite courses that can be completed during year 3.
In your final year, you can also participate in the Applied Portfolio Management Program (after completing the Applied Investment Management Course in year 3).
International exchange
As part of the BCom program, you can spend 4 months on an academic exchange studying at one of our many partner universities across the world.
You can take business courses unavailable anywhere else, immerse yourself in rich cultures and, along the way, discover new things about yourself and your place in the world.
With partnerships in 40 countries, the hardest part will be deciding where to go!
Note: Exchange is available to BCom students who have successfully completed the cohorted experience with a minimum GPA of 4.0.
