Meet Dr. Charles Yam
About
My pronouns are he/him. I came to Canada from Hong Kong during my teenage years. After completing high school in Edmonton, I attended the University of Alberta and then enrolled and obtained my M.D. from the University of Calgary. I opened a family practice clinic in Calgary to provide longitudinal care to the community for more than three decades.
My experience was enriched by working part-time as a physician at the University of Calgary's Student Health Services from 1980 to 2010, where I found helping students prioritize their health very gratifying. Caring for international students when they were adjusting to being far away from their family, like I had once been, was particularly rewarding.
I consider promoting student healthcare to be one of the essential elements of a positive and supportive university experience. I feel privileged that I can continue to learn through contributing as a member of the Student Wellness team and together care for the students at UVic.
I respect the Songhees and Esquimalt Peoples on whose territory the University stands and I am grateful to be working here.
