If you would like to apply for advanced standing (i.e. admission to second-year workshops), you must submit a cover letter, a CV, and a portfolio.
Cover Letter
Your cover letter should discuss why you feel you should be considered for advanced standing and the genres you intend to pursue in your studies.
CV
Your CV should include your academic experience, published works, readings you may have given, performances or screenings of your work, and any relevant community engagement.
Portfolio
Your portfolio should consist of writing samples from three (3) of the five genres taught in WRIT 100. The genres and writing samples are:
- Fiction—a complete short story of up to 1,000 words.
- Creative nonfiction—a complete short story of up to 1,000 words.
- Poetry—one or more poems of 25-35 lines total
- Screen—a 5-10 page screenplay or excerpt
- Stage—a 5-10 page stage play or excerpt
Under exceptional circumstances, and if you have a strong record of professional publication, you may apply for advanced standing in a single genre and submit a portfolio of 20-30 pages that contains samples of your published work. is still highly recommended.
Format
Fiction and creative non-fiction submissions should be typed, double-spaced. Screenplays and stage plays should adhere to industry-standard formatting. Please ensure your full name is included on each of your three portfolio submissions.
Deadline
Complete applications for advanced standing (cover letter, CV, and portfolio) must be submitted to the department between January 15 and April 15 for admission in September in the same year.
WARNING: Advanced standing does not guarantee placement in workshops. You may take a maximum of 1.5 units of workshops in a single genre per term, and a maximum of 3.0 units of workshops in any given term.
