Language proficiency
English is the language of instruction at UVic. You must demonstrate English language proficiency to attend UVic.
You have met this requirement if:
- English is your primary language
- you have a degree from a designated English-speaking country
- you have a degree from a recognized institution at which the language of instruction is English
We accept six language tests as proof of English language proficiency: CAEL, Cambridge CAE/CPE, IELTS, MET, PTE or TOEFL.
Official test score reports must be sent directly to UVic by the testing agency.
We cannot accept test scores more than two years old.
Minimum test scores
Note: Individual departments may set a higher standard for minimum test scores.
CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language Assessment)
- a score of at least 70 with no component below 60
Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE – Certificate in Advanced English) or C2 Proficiency (CPE- Certificate of Proficiency in English)
- a score of at least 180 with no component below 170
IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
- a score of at least 6.5 with no section less than 6.0
- we accept the academic IELTS (not general) taken at a test centre or online
- we accept IELTS Academic One Skill Retake
MET (Michigan English Test)
- a score of at least 64 with no section less than 60
PTE (Pearson Test of English)
- a score of 65 with no skill less than 60
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language internet-based (iBT))
- a score of at least 90 with no section less than 20
- we accept the TOEFL iBT taken at a test centre or the iBT home edition
- we accept TOEFL MyBest Scores
- UVic’s TOEFL institution code is 0989
University Admission Preparation (UAP)
If you are unable to provide proof of language proficiency you may still be considered if you meet all other admission requirements. In this case, you’ll complete UVic’s University Admission Preparation (UAP) course. Your prospective academic unit must be willing to admit you under this condition. You must complete the UAP with a grade of at least 80%.
UAP is a 12-week program offered in January, April and September. It is also offered in an intensive four-week format every summer.
