The cherry blossom trees blooming in June at the ßÉßɱ¬ÁÏ create a beautiful backdrop for Pride month celebrations. It’s as if nature is also rejoicing in the beauty of diversity and inclusivity. Pink petals a symbol of love, acceptance, grace and identity in every place.
From the Stonewall riots to present day, the journey has been long and challenging but the resilience and determination by the 2SLGBTQIA+ community has led to significant milestones. As a writer who is originally from Africa, I would say in my language that “It’s not yet uhuru” - meaning that some of the countries are still lagging, or not accepting. There are many voices that need to be amplified with their stories and lived experience shared with the rest of the world. This is crucial for promoting understanding, empathy, and inclusivity.
However, let’s shine the spotlight on the ßÉßɱ¬ÁÏ and its effort to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone. The university’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion is truly commendable, and there are indeed many exciting events and initiatives happening across campus and in Victoria that the community can be part of.
Pride Events
- will be running from June 24-28, 1 p.m. - 2 p.m.
- will be held at Graduate House on June 25, 4:30 p.m. - 7 p.m.
- will be on July 7, starts at 11 a.m.
