James Joyce pictured with his grandson

This exhibit features a series of photographs taken by Gisèle Freund featuring James Joyce during his last years in Paris.

Many of the photographs in the exhibit were previously unpublished and are presented under an agreement with the .

This online exhibit is a digital version of an exhibit held at the ßÉßɱ¬ÁÏ Special Collections and University Archives, which was the first time Gisèle Freund's James Joyce photographs had been shown in Canada. Special Collections houses Freund's personal and public material relating to the book, James Joyce in Paris: His Final Years.


Life in Japan image, detail

The collection consists of photographic glass-plate transparencies depicting life in Japan, including scenery, street scenes, workers, farming, fishing, silk production, stone carvers, wood carvers, metal workers, potters, and artists. The photographs were collected by Herbert Geddes, a manager for G.R. Gregg and Company, importers and exporters. He was sent to Japan and was based in Yokohama between 1908 and 1918.

Photographs taken to supplement the July, 1975 edition of the ßÉßɱ¬ÁÏ's Malahat Review, issue number 35 edited by Robin Skelton and William David Thomas. The edition was subtitled "A Gathering in Celebration of the Eightieth Birthday of Robert Graves".

The UVic historical photograph collection consists of photographs acquired by the ßÉßɱ¬ÁÏ Archives of the ßÉßɱ¬ÁÏ and its predecessors, the Provincial Normal School and Victoria College.


Brigadier General W.O.H. Dodds

Photographs and a scrapbook relating to the life and service of Brigadier General W.O.H. Dodds, CMG, DSO, in the Great War of 1914-1918 and extending to his death on 25 August 1934. Brigadier General Dodds joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1914 and was commanding officer of the 5th Canadian Division Artillery and served in France from 1917-1918.

Archie Wills (1892-1988) was born in Victoria, BC, served with the Canadian Forces Artillery in France during the First World War, and worked as a journalist for the Victoria Times and Daily Colonist newspapers both before and after his service.


1914 image of soldier leaving for service

This album of photographs, taken by J. A. Millar, contains scenes of the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Valcartier Camp, at Quebec, and at Gaspe Harbour immediately prior to sailing to Britain in 1914. Millar was a staff photographer of the Montreal Daily Star and produced the album in 1915.
