Graduate Certificate & Graduate Diploma in Evaluation
The Graduate Certificate and Diploma in Evaluation programs are ideal for both new and mid-career professional evaluators. You’ll build the critical knowledge and skills needed to improve decisions around initiatives and contribute to building a more equitable, sustainable and thriving society. Once you finish the certificate program, you can apply to continue into the diploma program.

Program structure
You’ll take 4 online courses (6 units) for the graduate certificate. The graduate diploma program adds an applied evaluation project (3 units) after you’ve finished the certificate program.
You’ll enrol in 1 course each term. Usually, you can finish the certificate in less than 2 years.
Term 1 Fall – ADMN 537 (1.5 units) Foundations for Program Evaluation
Term 2 Spring – ADMN 580* (1.5) Qualitative Evaluation Approaches and Methods
Term 3 Summer – ADMN 581* (1.5) Quantitative Methods for Policy Analysis and Program Evaluation
Term 4 Fall – ADMN 583 (1.5) Culturally Responsive Evaluation
Term 5 Spring – ADMN 596 (3.0) Evaluation Project (requirement for graduate diploma only)
* One methodology course may be substituted with an approved elective.

Admissions
The deadline to apply is March 31 for the program starting each September. If you are interested in the diploma program, you must first be admitted to the certificate program.
Why our program is different
Our instructors are renowned experts in culturally responsive and equity-focused approaches to evaluation. They are specialists in collaborative and participative evaluation, theory-based evaluations, qualitative approaches and evaluation for planetary health.
Whether you plan to work at the community level, in government or as a researcher or consultant, this online program will:
- give you key skills and knowledge on a range of evaluation approaches, methodologies and methods
- introduce you to debates and new trends in the field of evaluation
- develop your capacity to lead culturally-responsive evaluations as well as other kinds of evaluations
- apply a working knowledge of both qualitative and quantitative evaluation methodologies
- build the evaluator competencies identified by the as part of professionalizing evaluation practice in Canada
Concurrent programs
If you’re in the MPA-thesis or MACD program, you can enroll in the certificate program at the same time. You can also focus your thesis on an applied evaluation project to gain more applied evaluation experience.

Funding
UVic offers scholarships that may be GPA or application-based. Most scholarships are awarded based on recommendations made by the department. However, some may require a separate application form.
